It has been revealed that a teenage girl killed in Colchester, Essex, in 2010 was hit by a driver who had recently failed an eye test.
Cassie McCord was struck by a car as she walked along Head Street in Colchester on 7th February 2010. The 16 year old, who was on her way to school, was killed after she was hit by a car being driven by 87 year old Colin Horsfall mounted the pavement. Cassie was taken to nearby Colchester General Hospital but died shortly afterwards of her injuries.
Mr McCord also died shortly after the accident. The coroner reported that the elderly motorist had refused to surrender his driving licence to police just days before the tragic accident, despite failing an eyesight test and recorded that Cassie was unlawfully killed.
The McCord family have now begun a campaign for Cassie’s Law; a law that would give the police power to temporarily suspend the driving licences of motorists whom they feel are unfit to drive. The campaign is being backed by Colchester Liberal Democrat Sir Bob Russell MP.
